Call of the Mountains

Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself , “I do not want this to end?” Well , these were my thoughts when I finished reading this novella, which is a debut attempt by the author . Let us know more about the book.

Book Review

Title of the Book:Xanadu

Author's Name: Harshita Nanda

Format: PDF

About the Author: Harshita Nanda is an avid reader and a lover of the written word. A chance win at a short story competition ignited the writing spark in her. Starting from book reviews, she moved on to writing short stories and dabbling in flash fiction. A doting mother, a loving wife and a proud daughter, she has been managing her multiple roles along with been able to give time to her passion of reading and writing. You can find all her work on her blog

Narration: The style of narration is engaging. It is clear and has the ability to hold the attention of the readers and effectively sends the message of the plot where multiple stories merge like small rivers merging in an ocean.

Book Cover & Title: The title of the book is eye catching and the book cover justifies the title . It literally showcases a place where a small house is surrounded by serene environment and is located amidst tall mountains. One would certainly want to find one’s solace in this kind of place.

This book is a contemporary fiction. This novella is a potpourri of sentiments like compassion, empathy, betrayal, longing , anguish and many more human emotions. The page of acknowledgements itself will tell you that the author is herself a very emotional person. Hence she has been successful in making the readers feel what the characters feel in the book.

The best part is the cliff hanging ending of each chapter that will compel you to turn the next page and continue reading. The author presents before us a tale of many lives interwoven with each other where sometimes destiny plays its role to unite them and sometimes fate intervenes them and separates the ones who had never imagined to live away from each other.

The stand out character for me was that of Ms. Anita, whose life journey from being a maiden that had multiple suitors to a lonely old spinster is heartening . You start to sympathize with her but then when you come across her silent resilience to face every challenge that her fate throws on her way, you can only get inspired from her. Be it the heart touching story of little Bhoomi & the naughty Harish or the difficult life of Shalini or the love hate relationship of Arjun all have been brilliantly depicted in the story.

This is like a mini movie where fast paced series play and the author holds the strings in her hands tied to different characters and they are like puppets dancing to her skillful wordplay! The three central characters of Ms. Anita, Bhoomi & Harish will play with your heart and despite many ongoing events keep you hooked to the story till the very end.

A small part of the book is produced below and you can see the depth and layers of heart touching feelings that is brilliantly exhibited.

Swirling the amber liquid in his glass, he
pondered about the direction his life would take
from now. His life seemed to be divided into two
parts. The first was in India with Anita, and then his
life in England, without Anita. He knew which life
he preferred. Life seemed colourless and
meaningless without Anita. It had taken him twenty
years to realise that he needed Anita in his life.

This book is recommended with a strong cup of tea/ coffee and one can sit in your favorite corners in the house and take a trip to a land of fiction that seems nothing but real and crystal clear !
