“Hey, trainee… first day at work, right? Where are you from?” My reverie was interrupted.
“Odisha.”
“And where is that?”
Perplexed, I answered, “Eastern India.”
“But that is Arunachal Pradesh!”
“No, that is North East.”
“So, is it in the south?”
“Nah… Eastern part of India.”
“East! Exactly where?”
With irritation in my voice, I asked, “Did you not have an atlas at school?”
“What? What did you say?”
Just then, the HR manager entered the cafeteria & smiled at me.
“Oh! It seems you have already met Mr. Aloysius Fernandes. You will be reporting to him.”
I wanted to turn back & run.
Love,
Chinmayee

It’s disheartening that so many still can’t differentiate between Northeast and Eastern India. A stark reality—brilliantly served with a dash of humor!

Yes. I wanted to touch upon the fact that some people belittle you because you come from a particular region without feeling guilty about not having common sense or basic knowledge . It is ironic to me.

I have seen people labelling you based on your religion, community, surname or the place where you come from. Questioning about Atlas was irony!
